Post 16 Rugby 2011-2012
The 6th
form rugby machine is gathering speed, size and strength. We have
launched and confirmed that we will be touring South Africa for 10 days in July
2013. So exciting times ahead!
This season
so far
We beat
Churchill 6th form 37-10 in our opening fixture at home with lots
new face post 16 making a massive impact.
In the Daily
Mail cup we lost a close game to St Brendans 7 - 10 with a last minute try from
Matt Phillips disallowed
Then Somehow
we played them again the vase competition at home and revenge was sweet and
deserving, winning 15 nil. This was against a side that had many giants and
some skilful backs
We now play
Chew Valley away in the 4th Round, we will need some fire in the
belly for this one.
The next
opponents were Castle School in the Bristol School Cup. We travelled away and
with wet conditions played up the very hilly slope in the first half. Some
immense tackling and defensive organisation meant the home team only scored one
converted try before half time. With a score of 5-0 at half time and Ashton
playing down the slope in the second half it was to make for an interesting
second half battle. However, the home team showed their class in their
off-loads out of the tackle and scored 2 quick tries. Ashton's heads dropped,
with a few key players becoming injured. The forwards then 'turned the screw'
and battled hard to get close to the line with Issac champion and Alex Souch
scoring in both corners. Castle school then closed the game off with 2 well
worked tries to make the final score 25-10. Ashton face the Grange school in
the Vase competition of the Bristol Cup. Watch this space
The Hanham
High 10s tournament.
With our
squad of 12 which contained only 2 recognised backs and couple of mershanries
our outlook on the day was postitive but relaxed. First game we beat the Grange
27 nil and should have been more if it was not for white fever. Second game was
Downend in which we rested key players and basically we were a fast 10 man
scrum and won 22 nil. They came the pool decider the Hosts Hanham High a close,
fast and exciting game which saw us win 7 nil and our best game of keeping the
ball and doing the basics right. Semi Final saw us play our old rivals St
Brendans 1 1 on games played this season. The lads stream rolled them in a light
effected game 17 nil. The final saw us against the favourites Wellsway. We came
out the blocks like men possessed and scored early after one try could not be
given because it was so dark. Mason continued his amazing drop goal conversions
from the touch line. However they came back and scored in the dying seconds and
the scores were level. Now pitch black unable to play extra time a draw was
called however on count back Ashton had concede fewer points that only 1
try/conversion. So the tournament was theirs. A fantastic day, well done to
Riccardo, Calum, Dan, Mason, Luke, Skipper Billy, Jack, Josh, Mitchell, Nathan,
Ben and Kyle. A day legends were born.
Bring on the sevens!
