Post 16 Football 2011 - 2012
Throughout the season so far the football team has
experienced a number of triumphs and have had a promising cup run which was
ended last Wednesday by a shock defeat to Backwell after extra time. The first
game of the cup run was a bye and this therefore meant that we went straight
into the second round away to Chepstow which resulted in a 3-0 victory with a
brace from James Burton, then the next game was away to Churchill in the 3rd
round of the national cup and again a solo effort from Burton gave Ashton the
lead and a improvising back heel from captain Lewis Smart seemed to see the win
when a red card changed the game and put Ashton on the back foot and narrowly
scraped a 2-1 victory. Next up for the defiant Ashton was an away friendly
against Millfield and there was a giant killing on the cards, we arrived after
the 1hour 30 trip to a spectacular first team pitch and the facilities were
world class. On the pitch it was Ashton that put on the show and again defence
splitting pass by Smart played through the prolific Burton finished for another
goal, the game was a physical encounter and players such as Mason Gill Watkins,
Liam Butt and Matt Channing at centre half had the game of their lives, the
class of Millfield however was hard to contain and they used all of their
territory and possession and transferred it into a long awaited goal, however
great work from Jason Radnedge set up James Burton for his second chance of the
game and he wasn’t going to waste this chance and his brace sealed the game.
After the victory against Millfield the whole squad was on a high and it was a
return to the cup in the 4th round was that of Backwell, Ashton had
seemed to dominate the physical encounter however missing many chances the game
had to see another through ball from Smart leading to a spectacular strike from
Radnedge to break his duck in front of goal with a Torres like finish from 30
yards, however Backwell scored with 5 seconds left and therefore forced the
game into extra time, again heroics from the keeper Gill Watkins wasn’t enough
and in the second halve the Backwell winger dispatched a header into the top
corner to the despair of the Ashton 11. After a good start to the season there
are many players that stand out so far
and this includes the prolific Burton
scoring a number of vital goals for the team and this was also down to the help
of his strike partner who doesn’t stop running Radnedge, also the defenders
Channing and Butt held a strong line in front of the inform Mason Gill Watkins,
and full back hedges and Derrick also held a strong line with the midfield
having working hard and creating goals
throughout the many games, Jones Smart and Phillips. Having being knocked out
of the cup the players of the squad and manager Mr Redman are looking forward
to the start of the league season after Christmas after having a great run of
games in the cup and in friendlies.
